State monopoly over schooling is the tool authoritarian governments reach for first. Educational pluralism is antifascist insurance — including against the far right.
Here is the argument this site is built on, stated plainly: whoever controls the formation of children controls the next electorate. That is why authoritarian governments reach for schooling first. It is also why the generation that defeated fascism wrote parental choice into the Universal Declaration of Human Rights three years later.
Insurance, not ideology
Educational pluralism — many kinds of schools, funded and regulated but not monopolized by the state — is not a libertarian talking point. It is antifascist insurance. When no single institution forms every child, no single ideology can capture the next generation without contest.
That insurance protects liberals today. It also protects conservatives, religious minorities, and secular families tomorrow. It protects everyone from the day after an election goes wrong.
What consolidation enables
Proposition 212 does not hand Arizona's schools to the far right tomorrow. It builds the compliance machinery that consolidates the provider landscape toward what the Department of Education can register, monitor, and discipline. Over time, fewer independent alternatives survive.
The historical record is explicit about what comes next in regimes that complete that sequence. Mussolini called school reform his most Fascist policy. Hitler said your child belongs to us already — Nuremberg document 2455-PS, November 1933. Pius XI named statolatry and the monopoly of the young in 1931.
Intent is beside the point. A machine outlives the people who build it, and this one is available to whoever holds power next — including the far right.
The liberal answer already exists
Pierce v. Society of Sisters (1925) said the child is not the mere creature of the State. The UDHR said parents have a prior right to choose. John Stuart Mill — who supported compulsory education and state payment of poor children's fees — objected to the state directing what is taught, because it establishes a despotism over the mind.

Pluralism is not a luxury. It is the insurance policy. Vote NO on Proposition 212.
